A little bit of 3D goes a long way. If you're going for more texture than drama, try the bandage dress or any one of its pleated and tiered spinoffs. For more experimental looks, try a dress like the one shown from Calvin Klein with its 3D folds.
The transparent trend can actually quite modest, when layered over other (solid) pieces like at Vera Wang. With a nude lining, shown here at Monique Lhuillier, the effect is ethereal. Illusion-top (sheer netting) dresses are another alternative and can be found at great prices.
One rule about wearing sheer: either buy lingerie that is meant to be seen (pretty camis, nude slips) or keep it completely out of sight.

"In the collage of elements, there were recycled fabrics and natural-looking hemp weaves, and a sidelong tribalism in the urban-warrior eye makeup and footwear. The street element had some of the flavor of the hit "student" collection of Fall 2007, and it will certainly give license to young women—and the vendors of fast fashion—to look at sweats and gym skirts in a whole new, highly commercial light."
